Baby bloom by Erika Knight

Interesting angle on the baby knitting book, this also includes patterns for maternity clothes for the expectant mother. I was expecting more from this than it gave. After looking at sites like Knitty, the patterns here are written in a somewhat old-fashioned style (lots of piecing together) and there isn’t really anything really new. The maternity clothes were alright, but perhaps didn’t make as much of being for pregnant-shaped people as I was hoping for. Empire line stuff from elsewhere would be just as good for me, and probably have a lot less seaming!

Kaffe knits again by Kaffe Fassett

Basically a reworking of some of his classic knitting patterns in new colourways and available Rowan yarns. The good stuff is the colour combinations and ideas. The bad stuff is the same as always – most of this stuff would take me years to knit. Tons of intarsia. The colourwork is better suited for needlework (which he has done a book of). Of course the fact that these are difficult to knit does add to the effect. Beautiful to look at. There is one pattern (Caterpillar) that is striped in an easy to knit manner. Some of the others could be adapted to be easier (by breaking up the pattern, using less colour, etc). For the rest just admire the pictures in Ravelry, but note that most have the caveat “I started this jumper in 1991 and have only just finished it…”)

Good selection of knitting patterns for non-animal yarns (as long as you think silk caterpillars are not an animal). Beautiful stuff to look at. The patterns aren’t totally amazing, its more the yarns. Lots of great advice.
